15 de junio de 1972. Mendoza despedía a Julio Suárez Marzal, pintor, escultor, muralista, docente, crítico de arte e investigador incansable. Había nacido en Tapalqué, provincia de Buenos Aires, el 18 de noviembre de 1906, y llegó a convertirse en una figura clave para la vida artística cuyana. Formado en Bellas Artes, compartió atelier con Emilio Pettoruti y construyó una obra marcada por el paisaje, la montaña, la síntesis geométrica y una mirada profundamente americana. En 1937 se radicó en Mendoza, donde dirigió la Escuela de Cerámica de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo y dejó una huella decisiva en la educación artística local. Su nombre también quedó ligado al Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Fernando Fader: tuvo un papel central en la adaptación de la antigua Casa Guiñazú como museo, lo dirigió durante años y hasta proyectó el parque de esculturas que rodea el edificio. Su idea del arte no era fría ni distante: buscaba acercarlo al pueblo, hacerlo parte del espacio público y de la identidad nacional.
