I ordered a custom birthday cake six months in advance from a bakery that always sells out.
When I arrived for pickup, another customer was trying to convince the staff to give her my cake because she'd forgotten to place an order.
She pointed at me and said, "You can just get another one later."
The bakery owner replied, "No, that's her cake."
The woman looked genuinely offended.
"I have guests arriving tonight!"
The owner nodded.
"Which is why people place orders ahead of time."
Planning ahead is not selfish.
Expecting strangers to fix your lack of planning is.
