Wembyโs brand has taken a massive hit after the NBA Finals.
He went from hero to zero extremely quick. But it is important to recognize the peaks and valleys a Superstar athlete goes through.
Wemby became a household name over the last month. He will be loved and then he will be hated. He will be hated and then he will be loved.
I am thankful for Wemby because he had what it takes to knock off the Thunder. He will remain their cryptonite.
What did I see during the Finals? Wemby is the greatest defensive player I have ever seen. On offense he is absolutely a monster of a problem. The defense does not know how to guard him in the pick and roll and the refs are utterly confused on how to call the game. That is why you see so many awful calls.
Now the issues:
He has a lack of awareness for how many eyeballs are on him. It is a major problem. Casual fans see him as a brat, a dirty player, a sore loser, and someone that disrepects America by not respecting the National Anthem. His outfit choice after 1 game was fine for someone representing his beliefs, but was something that we will likely never see again in the social media world of perception vs reality. As expected, the mainstream became divided on him fast.
He is French which will give him Pepe Lepew vibes before he even gets started with certain fans. So his brand is somewhat handicapped. But Wemby may not care about bis brand, just like some other athletes. And if he doesnโt care his marketing value will tank. Nobody will want to be affiliated with his brand if he disrespects the game.
Engaged fans understand the kid wants to win at any cost. And he will. He is a generational talent. But the Culture of American Basketball (the NBA) values the off the court image just as much as on the court. It is still early for Wemby, but the NBA needs to link him up with the right branding team so they can take whatever the culture is responding to right now, and spin it into a positive trait for the community to rally behind.
The last time I saw someoneโs image take this type of hit was LeBron in 2011. He recovered quick. But LeBron was also beloved for so long before his brand took a hit. This will be interesting to see how everything develops with Wemby.
It will be interesting to see if Nike continues to go all in on Wemby or if the red flags during the Finals will push their attention elsewhere.
Now for collectors:
Buy what you love. Buy the best of the best for Wemby. Do not stop. He is generational. Do I think someone spending $5 Million on his card needs his head checked? Yes, I do. But not because of Wemby. Because of the collectible. I do not see it as the best of the best.
Athletes go up and down. Especially a young one like Wemby.
In 2012 everyone wrote off Stephen Curry because he kept having ankle injuries. What happened to the collectors that abandoned ship? Regret.
When the best of the best surfaces for an athlete you love, you continue to focus on expanding the story of a collection via physical objects.
So with Wemby the path remains the same. This Finals was a part of his story, just like 2011 was a part of LeBronโs.
Have I heard collectors say they will never buy a Wemby item in the past week? Yes, I have. But I also do not think they are experienced enough collectors to make that statement publicly where it would influence.
My official take on Wemby is Buy the Best as a collector. Do not buy Wemby has an investment only. The ones buying Wemby as an investment only will be in for a wild ride, and his ups and downs will cause panic. He is priced as a ๐ and there are red flags that have emerged that can completely torch his brand which will not bother collectors in it for the long haul, but those looking to flip? They will be sweating it out every time Wemby opens his mouth or chooses to make a potential political statement.
His โsee you neverโ comment to the media was wild. The warning signs are there, just like the signs of greatness.
โI think there was a lot of pettiness. Words like arrogance come up. I think being a sore loser comes up. Thatโs a sign of somebody who is 22 years oldโฆ to be frank with you, itโs watching someone become the Villianโ
