#Devdas.. My all-time fav film. It made me a die-hard #ShahRukhKhan fan. From the opening scene to the very end, I still remember almost every dialogue vividly.
Ek ki shiddat, toh doosri ki mohabbat hai Dev ❤️

Sorry but calling her average is insult to Madhuri. She has given some brilliant performances in movies like beta, anjaam, sangeet, lajja, mrutudand, devdas, prahar. It was Madhuri replaced Sridevi, not other way around and Juhi is good actress but she doesn’t have aura like Mad

After dinner it is always time for some old Hindi songs. Tonight I came back again to this one from the old Devdas. Talat Mahmood singing. SD Burman's composition. Sahir's lyrics. Three minutes. One stanza. And it hits me differently every time. मितवा लागी रे ये कैसी अनबुझ आग The first word is mitwa. My beloved. Then he says the fire has caught. Anbujh aag. Not just a fire you can put out. A fire you cannot even understand. Sahir chose that word carefully. Anbujh. It has two meanings woven together. Unquenchable and unknowable. You are burning and you do not know why. Talat sings this line and you can hear it in his voice. He is not shouting. He is not crying. He is just telling you what happened to him. मितवा मितवा मितवा नहीं आए Three times he says mitwa. My beloved. My beloved. My beloved. And then the word that destroys everything. Nahin aaye. Did not come. I think about why three times. Once is a fact. Twice is insistence. Three times is what you actually do when someone is not there. You call. You wait. You call again. You wait more. You call a third time. The silence after the third call is different from the silence after the first. It has weight. It has given up on something. And the tense. Nahin aaye. Did not come. Not will not come. Not cannot come. Did not come. The disappointment is already finished. The song starts on the other side of it. लागी रे ये कैसी What kind of fire is this? He is talking to the fire. Not to God. Not to anyone who can help. To the fire itself. And the fire just sits there burning. It does not explain itself. That is the worst part. You cannot argue with it. You cannot negotiate with it. It is just there. व्याकुल जियरा, व्याकुल नैना Vyakul appears twice. The heart is restless. The eyes are restless. Two different kinds of restlessness. Inside and outside. The inside you can hide. The outside you cannot. Your eyes tell on you. And vyakul is not just bechain. Bechain is I cannot sit still. Vyakul is something has been broken from the root. A nest destroyed. The bird comes back and there is nothing left. That is vyakul. एक-एक चुप में सौ-सौ बैना This line breaks me every time. Ek ek chup mein. In each silence. Sau sau baina. A hundred hundred things unsaid. Sahir knew what most writers do not understand. Silence is not empty. Silence is full. Every quiet moment between two people who love each other but cannot be together has a hundred things in it. Things that were never said. And they sit there. They pile up. Each silence has more in it than the one before. This is what Devdas carries. Between him and Paro. Every meeting that never happened. Every letter he never wrote. Every night he sat drinking instead of going to her. All the unsaid things. They are still there. रह गए आँसू, लुट गए राग Raag. Melody. But also passion. Also beauty. Also the raga you were supposed to sing but your throat is full of tears. Loot gaye. Plundered. Not lost. Looted. Someone took it. The beauty, the music, the words. All taken. What is left. Rah gaye. Only tears. This is the image I cannot get out of my head. Something has been stolen from him. Not his happiness. Not his love. His ability to turn pain into something. His raag. Gone. And what is left is just the raw crying. No melody. No shape. मितवा मितवा मितवा The song ends the way it began. Three times. My beloved. And silence. Nothing is resolved. The fire is still burning. The beloved has still not come. The tears are still there. The unsaid words are still piling up in every silence. The song does not move forward. It stays in the same place. That is why you can keep coming back to it. Because it does not give you an ending. It gives you your own unsaid words. Your own silences. Your own loot gaye raag. Three minutes. One stanza. After all these years the fire is still burning. The beloved still has not come. #HindiSongs #TalatMahmood #SahirLudhianvi #Devdas youtu.be/218py1kN1AU?si=Txyi…
