Yes that is kind of what we did for #dotdotastro, I liked it. I like the “office hours” idea. I think we really have to re-design conferences to make them work virtually.
What we found worked quite well for #dotdotastro is to ask speakers to pre-record talks. We then played them in the talk session, and the speaker could join the discussion alongside (for which we used Slack). Ping me if you want to talk more about that!
Excellent work from this group, taking a closer look at the cost/benefit issue of satellite megaconstellations 👏 Sparked by @RocketToLulu’s talk at #dotdotastro and many subsequent conversations. Great stuff.
We did prerecorded talks for #dotdotastro. We watched them together and speaker could answer question in parallel on slack, followed by more live discussion. I really liked it as a speaker - less stress, more focus on interesting discussions.
I do think (and we discussed this at #dotdotastro 2 wks ago) that a PhD student’s thesis should also never rely on a single result in that way. The supervisor has some responsibility there to make sure the students gets a good thesis regardless of unexpected shenanigans.
Unfortunately I think these arguments won’t stop big $$$ tech companies from being allowed to make more $$$ in space. had good disc at #dotdotastro about it which focused a lot on calling out the companies for a flawed business model & weaponising “good for humanity”
Thoroughly enjoyed #dotdotastro - the latest evolution of #dotastro. The online format worked well overall and I'm excited to improve on it in a future edition. Thanks for @chrislintott and @sarahkendrew for helping me make it happen - and to all our speakers and participants ❤️
You all know in your heart which of these won the round #dotastro#dotdotastro Thanks for a delightful (and partly asynchronous, for me) event!
ALT Apples to apples style game with "blank isn't a constellation!" and 12 potential answer cares (Orion's Belt, Star Trek, Vera Rubin, Margaret Hamilton, Dust, Jeff Bezos, Another 60 Starlink satellites, Einstein's tongue, Pluto, My University, Colin, Johannes Kepler)
I've just done my first ever recording of the flute for a #dotdotastro hack. Then for the reference I did a few of the regular pieces I use for practice. Well, while I came a long way in 3 months, I'm happy I'm not my housemates. Everything sounds so much better from the inside.
Really great to hear about this interesting work this week at #dotdotastro 👍 Living, working & providing services in countries with 10-20 indigenous languages is a big challenge in many African countries - but technology can help.
Walked down memory lane this week at Day2 of #dotdotastro to talk about the my first @DeepIndaba poster project in 2017 (😄I was so shy to put up A4 slides), and how important that is now for what we are doing at @MasakhaneNLP 🙂 Happy to be part of the #indabaSocial

At #dotdotastro we're trying to create an astronomers version of not all bad cards (think Cards against humanity). Contributions welcome: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…
