IT Operations from Tarzan Field Office
Location: Field Office, Northwest of Tarzan, Martin County, Texas
Today, I'm working from the field office northwest of Tarzan, Texas. Tarzan is a small cotton farming community in Martin County, located in the Tarzan-Grady area north of Stanton and south of Lamesa.
The office sits among well-maintained caliche roads and rich red farmland. This area tends to catch a good share of the rain that falls on Midland and Ector counties, so it’s usually one of the first spots to see flooding when storms roll through. A decent rain can quickly turn these caliche roads into a muddy, swampy mess, and some of the paved roads often wash out during the heavier rainy months, making travel slow and difficult.
Working from this oilfield location also brings the usual set of IT headaches. We depend on satellite or rural cellular service, so connectivity is often spotty—especially during rain or storms when the signal drops or slows to a crawl. High latency makes video calls frustrating, and uploading larger files like well logs or photos can take forever or time out completely. Power fluctuations from storms cause occasional outages and equipment restarts, while dust and heat tend to make laptops and routers overheat or act up. VPN connections to the main office are unreliable at best, particularly in the afternoons.
Quick Notes / Recommendations:
Keep an eye on the weather forecast, especially when rain is expected.
Drive carefully on the caliche and secondary paved roads, and have backup routes ready.
For IT: Work offline when possible, keep a mobile hotspot handy, and save big uploads or calls for clearer weather.
