Color and pattern are overrated
Most guys will tend to focus on these because they're the most easily recognizable.
When everyone else is wearing white or blue, orange is different and we assume different is good.
Same goes for introducing a plaid or a pinstripe to get more attention when everyone else is in solids.
But if you take this exact same outfit and swap out the polo he has on for some orange golf polo and the trousers for a pair of cheap, synthetic plaid things from a fast-fashion brand, it's goin to lose all of its style.
Color and pattern are good levers to pull but the more important ones we see here are material, texture, and fit.
If I could give one piece of advice to every guy it would be to get rid of any synthetic clothing you have unless it is very performance specific.
Your daily wear should be cotton, wool, linen, cashmere, etc - not polyester, elastine, or all the other fake stuff.
Synthetic materials have both a cling and a sheen to them that don't look great on anyone.
Next is to focus on texture - unless you're in a formal situation, your clothing should have some depth to it and a good way to make this happen is by focusing on season materials.
Think flannel, tweed, and cashmere in the winter and things like linen, seersucker, fresco, etc in the summer.
Winter text keeps your body heat in and summer texture maximized airflow.
And third, pay attention to the fit. Notice in this photo that what he has on both flatters his body and looks like it can be lived in.
A lot of the slim stuff we were overdoing 10-15 was so skinny that it looked like you were a prop for your clothing and it was the main character.
Clothing should have enough room in it that you can play a round of golf, jog to your gate at the airport, pick up a toddler, or play catch with your friends.
But it shouldn't be so baggy that it hangs lifelessly off of you.
Getting the balance between those two is key.
When you dial in material, texture, and fit, you won't need to worry about color or pattern unless you absolutely want to.
