Today, the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum becomes fully applicable. As we already denounced, it expands mass screening and biometric surveillance, risks racial profiling, normalises detention (including for children), channels people into accelerated asylum and return procedures at the border and deepens externalisation of borders. EuroMed Rights condemns this rights-eroding approach. 🛂 The EU’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum enters fully into force today. Pragmatic progress – or geopolitically problematic? Europe’s external borders are a perennial political flashpoint – a place where administrative complexity, humanitarian commitments, divergent national policies and febrile public opinion collide. The New Pact is an attempt to bring a semblance of coherence to the complexity. Here are the key takeaways: 🟡  New screening procedures at the EU's external borders are introduced, along with expanded biometric registration through Eurodac, accelerated border asylum and return procedures, and a new ‘solidarity mechanism’ between Member States. 🟡 Deeper cooperation with third states will seek to prevent irregular migration and facilitate returns – but as externalisation becomes the norm, there is a real risk that Member States, acting nationally, will end up in a perverse competition to secure deals with non-EU countries willing to host extraterritorial facilities, undermining the cohesion of common efforts. 🟡 Meanwhile, the Union’s migration ‘partnerships’ with neighbouring countries could easily devolve into new dependencies which can be exploited – with Türkiye and Morocco having already shown that their crucial role in controlling migratory flows can be leveraged for geopolitical advantage. 🟡 As migration control increasingly takes place beyond EU territory, both democratic accountability and monitoring of fundamental rights compliance are, too, pushed out of sight. À force de marteler une "agression rwandaise" sans jamais en établir rigoureusement les contours, vous évacuez délibérément des réalités pourtant incontournables: l’existence de groupes comme l’AFC-#M23 ou TWIRWANEHO, dont l’ancrage local, les revendications politiques et les dyniques communautaires ne peuvent être balayés d’un revers de main. Faut-il comprendre, à vous lire, que ces mouvements n’existent pas, ou qu’ils seraient intégralement des constructions exogènes?! Une telle simplification relève davantage de la posture que de l’analyse lucide. Vous évoquez des "troupes rwandaises" présentes sur le sol congolais. Où sont-elles précisément déployées? Sous quel commandement identifié? Sur la base de quelles preuves vérifiables & indépendantes? Une accusation de cette gravité ne peut se contenter d’incantations répétées dans l’espace diplomatique. Plus préoccupant encore, l’implication de la #Belgique, loin de contribuer à une lecture factuelle du conflit, semble encourager une externalisation systématique des responsabilités. En validant le narratif selon lequel le #Rwanda constituerait l’unique clé explicative de la crise à l’Est, vous offrez au gouvernement congolais un alibi commode pour éluder les causes structurelles pourtant bien documentées: corruption endémique, gouvernance défaillante, instrumentalisation ethnique & faillite sécuritaire chronique. Ce faisant, vous ne contribuez ni à la résolution du conflit ni à la stabilisation de la région. Vous participez, au contraire, à l’entretien d’une fiction politique dangereuse: celle d’un conflit exclusivement exogène, qui dispense ses principaux acteurs internes de toute responsabilité. Quant aux accords de Washington, leur lecture ne peut être à géométrie variable. Si vous insistez à juste titre sur la neutralisation des #FDLR, encore faut-il reconnaître que cette question reste, elle aussi, systématiquement ignorée dans les faits, ce qui mine la crédibilité même des engagements que vous invoquez. Défendre la souveraineté de la #RDC ne devrait pas consister à en déformer les réalités internes, mais à les affronter avec rigueur. À défaut, ce discours relève moins du droit international que d’une rhétorique politique déconnectée du terrain. 🤷‍♂️
