Henna Knuuttila, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Finland in Tokyo, opened our femcode collective x Tokyo Design event by welcoming a full room of female builders and sharing where Finland-Japan relations stand right now.
Here’s something what’s happening:
In May 2026 Helsinki’s Mayor Sazonov was in Tokyo talking dual-use tech deals and defense startup collaboration with Nikkei Asia. A Team Finland business and innovation delegation visited Tokyo that same month. In February, Business Finland and Japan’s METI co-hosted a DeepTech forum in Helsinki.
The Japanese Ambassador to Finland recently called this a period of “unprecedented closeness” in bilateral relations. Over 100 years of diplomatic history and it has never been tighter than right now!
Finland’s startup ecosystem paired with Japan’s deep tech and capital access is not diplomatic small talk. Finnish scaleup IQM is already collaborating with Japan’s national research institute on quantum computing. 5G/6G, supercomputers, critical minerals all on the joint agenda.
And both countries are tackling the same demographic challenge. Aging populations. Shrinking workforces. Sound familiar?
A room full of women building tech products at the intersection of these two countries is the point! Time to build 🔥
