Why are Nigerian banks all migrating to Finacle and Flexcube at the same time? Their old systems..,Basis, Phoenix, T24 were built for a different era of banking. Lower transaction volumes. Mostly branch-based. Limited real-time requirements. Nigeria’s digital payment infrastructure has outgrown them. GTBank went directly to Infosys in India to negotiate a Finacle deal with no vendor middleman. Zenith and Access moved to Oracle’s Flexcube. Nigeria’s biggest banks are expected to spend at least ₦82 billion collectively on core banking software as part of this transition. Two platforms. Most of the country’s banking infrastructure. If either has a critical vulnerability, the blast radius is the entire Nigerian financial system. That’s the trade-off nobody talks about when celebrating the modernization.

If you worked in any of the banks in Nigeria using Oracle flexcube, you'd have to learn oracle PLSQL. Writing functions and procedures would become very normal, you'd just have to call them from your code. Interesting times ☺️
I once worked with a senior backend engineer who believed that the strongest backend systems were the ones where logic is written more on the database layer than on the code layer. The normal if-else statement you would write to check a users balance, bro writes all that logic directly on the DB, there were triggers, database functions etc. Bro was literally coding with SQL. At that point I didn’t know SQL could even do all that. Bro would review my code then and ask me why was I writing all that logic in code when it could reside directly on the db😂. This was way before AI and bro would prefer to write every single thing by hand rather than install a package, he felt they were not secure. Bro uses a framework just to repurpose it and customize everything! At The point working with bro, he was almost 40. Man! I’ve worked with cracked devs, and I’m grateful for every experience that has shaped me.

Every Nigerian bank runs on a Core Banking System. The biggest ones in Nigeria: Finacle (used by GTBank, Access). T24 (used by several others). Flexcube (used by some). These systems are the actual source of truth for your money. They're large. Slow to query directly. Expensive to access. Running on infrastructure sometimes dating back to the 1990s. If every balance check went directly to the core banking system the app would take 10-15 seconds to load. It doesn't. Because of caching.
