Want to fight poverty? Invest in everyday justice. Inclusive legal frameworks are the literal foundation for sustainable economic development (Murphy & Albu, 2018). When vulnerable populations lack basic access to justice, it traps communities in economic exclusion (Beqiraj, 0000). Legal aid is an investment with massive ROI. #GlobalDev

If the new International Panel on Inequality is to shift the needle, it must move beyond redistribution within a broken economic model and confront the model itself. Inequality is not an accident. Global inequality isn’t an accident, it is produced by systems that prioritize limitless growth over people and planet. The Panel must bring alternative paradigms — ecological, community-based, and commons-oriented — from the margins to the centre of global economic thinking. #IPI #globaldev 👉🏾wits.ac.za/news/latest-news/…
HIV is concentrated here in sub-Saharan Africa. But 90% of the countries with the highest burden of HIV are also highly indebted countries, either ranked as in debt distress or at high risk of debt distress. An unfair global financial architecture results in cyclic debt traps for developing countries. Two out of three countries in this region are paying 4x more towards debt servicing than to the health of their people. Such inequalities between and within countries are driving pandemics. 📽️ youtube.com/watch?v=khd6Jvd4…

Activism and generics changed that. Prices fell to under $50, treatment scaled up, and new bilateral and multilateral institutions emerged—such as @PEPFAR and the @GlobalFund. Today, over 30 million people are on HIV treatment. When rules bend toward justice, lives are saved. #GlobalDev #AccessToMedicines
The global HIV response exposed this clearly. Life‑saving treatment existed in 1996—but patents kept prices far out of reach of those in need, at $10,000 per person per year. Millions were denied care. An estimated 12 million people, mostly in Africa, died. This was a failure of global rules, not science.

We should name the system for what it is: a new oligarchic order, where wealth buys influence and a small elite shapes global rules—on finance, trade, taxation, knowledge, and more—to serve their interests. Only by confronting this directly can we begin to build something different and better. @GlobalDevInst #globaldev #oligarchy
Since 2000, the richest 1% captured over 40% of all new wealth—while the bottom half received just 1%. Meanwhile, 1 in 4 people globally are skipping bills, even as aid to the poorest is being cut. #EndInequalities #GlobalDevelopment 🔗 unaids.org/en/speeches/2026/…

The scale is staggering. In 2014, 85 people held as much wealth as half of humanity. Today, just 12 billionaires hold more wealth than 4 billion people. This is not progress. This is an extreme concentration of wealth and power. @GlobalDevInst #InequalityEmergency #globaldev
In my @OfficialUoM lecture, “The Oligarchic Order,” I argued inequality is not a side effect of the global system. It is designed into it. And today, it is breaking both multilateralism and democracy. But I remain an optimist: if we tackle the root causes of inequality, we can rebuild trust in both. 🔗unaids.org/en/speeches/2026/…
