They are also the least spoken about when we talk about "workplace culture." Manav wasn't an outlier. He was a symptom of a system that measures human beings by their output and nothing else. We have seen this pattern before. Anna Sebastian Perayil, 26, died four months into her job at EY Pune after raising concerns about unbearable workload that went unheard. Aravind Kannan, a manager at Ola Electric, left behind a 28-page note naming workplace harassment and sustained pressure before ending his life. These are the cases that made headlines. Most don't. And yet, our corporate culture continues to celebrate the manager who "never takes a day off." We promote people who send 11 PM emails. We deny leaves not because the business cannot survive, but because the boss personally defines dedication as suffering silently and showing up regardless. That is not leadership. That is just someone passing down their own damage. Research shows every ₹1 invested in workplace mental health returns ₹2.86 in productivity. Empathy is not charity. It is commercially intelligent. To every HR head, team lead, and corporate decision-maker reading this: Your delivery partner, your associate, your junior executive — they all have a story running parallel to their job. A sick parent. A loan EMI. A grief they have never spoken about. When you deny that leave, when you skip that check-in, when you reward the overworked and ignore the struggling — you are not managing a team. You are building a ticking clock. Normalise leaves. Build real mental health policies — not just a helpline number buried in the onboarding document. Train your managers to ask "are you actually okay?" and mean it.
