Due to this organizational plan we were able to manage about 300 ventilated patients and up to 24 patients simultaneously in 24 hours in the ED
Among the patients, five suffered from pneumonia, all of which were later confirmed to be COVID-19.
Moreover, the clinical findings in the first two intubated cases were a grim prediction of what was about to happen soon.
By noon of the 21st of February, right after the distribution of the equipment stock and first oxygen delivery, the number of respiratory-distressed patients began to rise. In the evening, after a short pause, the first peak of more than 50 patients with respiratory syndrome arrived. 😢
Most of the patients were assessed by traditional triage, but some deteriorated faster than expected — mainly young, male, febrile and severely hypoxic. Half of the patients constituted severe cases with NEWS score well above 7. During this first peak two patients were intubated, other 10 needed PEEP support, following 15 needed oxygen with various FiO2.
In the light of the fact that no family members were allowed in the ED, a special unit was established that managed all the external communication and delivered updates on the status of the patients present in the department two times a day (morning and afternoon)😢

SmartAid Medical Solution: Data Science at the Service of Hospitals
CONTEXT AND NEED
During the COVID-19 pandemic emergency, the Lodi Local Health Authority (ASST) is facing difficulties in defining response strategies.
SOLUTION
Moxoff developed SmartAid Medical Solution, a digital platform based on artificial intelligence algorithms that allows for quick and automatic monitoring of the situation across all departments, patient flow, and infection rates, as well as providing insights to support diagnostics.
DESCRIPTION
While the Lodi Local Health Authority (ASST) was already working on telemedicine with the Zucchetti Group, the request made to Moxoff directly by its director, Dr. Massimo Lombardo, was to use data to support the hospital's decision-making processes.
In close collaboration with hospital professionals, starting with Dr. Gabriele Perotti, Medical Director, and Dr. Marco Esposti, Head of Management Control, Moxoff developed a platform based on artificial intelligence algorithms capable of automatically monitoring and quickly managing the pressure and health status of the hospitals in its network, developing an advanced decision-making support system.
Thanks to SmartAid Medical Solution, the Lodi Local Health Authority (ASST) was able to streamline processes, optimize space and patient flow, and monitor the situation with greater speed and responsiveness.

FEB 2022 The “ASST Lodi🇮🇹: Europe’s COVID-19 Epicenter” by Profs F Gino & R Sadun: Perspectives
Francesca Gino, the Tandon Family Professor of Business Administration, and Raffaella Sadun, the Charles Edward Wilson Professor of Business Administration, discuss writing a case together. As fellow Italians experiencing the country’s COVID surge from afar, they wanted to collaborate on an issue close to their hearts that could bring useful lessons to the classroom. The “ASST Lodi, Italy: Europe’s COVID-19 Epicenter” multimedia case explores a small hospital system in Italy dealing with Europe's first COVID patient. The richness of the case analysis is deepened by their unique research perspectives: Gino’s from the Negotiation, Organizations, and Markets unit and Sadun’s from the Strategy unit.
