The NASA Communication Services Project Maxwell Mission aims to demonstrate advanced space relay capabilities using Viasat’s HaloNet and InCommand services. By testing inter-satellite links in the Ka-band and L-band, the mission will show how data from research satellites can be relayed through commercial systems to ground infrastructure. The Maxwell satellite will carry a hyperspectral imaging sensor to generate data for these relay demonstrations. Launch is scheduled on a SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket, with potential windows in October 2026 or April 2027 depending on manifest availability. While the satellite has a three-year operational lifespan, Viasat is seeking a four-year license to accommodate launch scheduling. Rocket Lab USA will operate the mission control center in Long Beach, California, managing commands and telemetry. Viasat has already begun building the satellite at its own risk to prepare for this multi-year test bed mission.
