I think it’s provided a valuable, meritocratic forum for political debate while also coming with some major downsides.
I am not social media’s biggest defender. But I think this is rushed, cack handed policy which won’t fix the problem and comes at the cost of ending online anonymity for all adults (which is a big price to pay.)
I am broadly of the view that the worst thing for young children is hours and hours spent watching short form content. And for very young children – hours spent watching hypnotic videos produced by companies like Moonbug Entertainment (who own the CoComelon channel.) I am convinced by the evidence that these fry attention spans and will never compete with other pursuits like reading.
I don't understand how kicking 15 year-olds off the biggest sites fixes this. There is a lot of evidence that many children benefit from educational content housed on YouTube.
I suspect (and much of the evidence seems to back this up) that the problem is excessive exposure to small screens unsupervised (or very lightly supervised) at a very young age. This legislation will do nothing to stop adults propping their children in front of CoComelon or whatever AI content will replace it (it’s already housed on Netflix as well as YouTube).
So I don't understand why the government isn't opting for a smartphone ban rather than targeting a dozen sites. The legislation will encourage many children to adopt VPNs, removing the option for parents to control internet usage. It will encourage other children on to smaller forums and sites that aren't regulated and likely have more harmful content. Children who circumvent rules and access social media are less likely to speak to an adult if they encounter problematic content as they know that they’re breaking the law.
As long as children have internet enabled smartphones on their person at all times (the average child receives a smartphone aged 11) I think we will continue to see harmful consequences, regardless of how the government tries to regulate the internet.

ב2020 חברת מדיה בריטית בשם Moonbug קנתה את בליפי ואת קוקומלון ב120 מיליון דולר. שנה אחר כך שני בכירים לשעבר מדיסני, עם גיבוי של ענקית ההשקעות בלאקסטון, קנו את Moonbug לפי שווי של עד 3 מיליארד דולר.
3 מיליארד. על חברה שהנכסים הכי גדולים שלה זה בחור בעניבת פרפר ושירים לפעוטות.
גדלנו על זה שאקזיט שייך לסטארטאפים. גיוס, משקיעים, טכנולוגיה, נאסד"ק. אבל בכלכלת היוצרים אקזיט נראה אחרת. מיסטר ביסט מגייס היום לפי שווי של 5 מיליארד דולר. בליפי נמכר פעמיים בתוך שנה וחצי. מי שיודע לייצר תשומת לב בסקאלה, מחזיק נכס. לא משרה.
האמת? לפעמים הקטן נרדם באמצע פרק ואני לא מכבה. יושב לבד מול בחור שזוחל בתוך מגלשה ומנסה להבין איך הבחור התמהוני הזה סגר אקזיט של 120 מיליון דולר.
הבן שלי רואה ליצן במשחקייה.

We don’t trust cigarette companies to tell us their product is addictive & dangerous, we can’t trust the NFL to honest about concussions and we can’t trust car manufacturers, oil, gas and energy companies to clean their own emmissions, why the heck would we trust Moonbug on this?
