In voting to oust Orbán -- despite the best efforts of the Kremlin and the White House (an extraordinary pairing) -- Hungarians have removed a pro-Putin toxin in the heart of Europe. This has a reverberant effect.
Péter Magyar's Hungarian government has dismissed every Orbán-era director-general of the intelligence agencies. Overseeing the shake-up is Péter Buda, a respected former counterintelligence officer and vocal critic of Orbán's pro-Russian foreign policy. vsquare.org/magyar-purges-or…

Hungary passes constitutional amendment: Prime ministers limited to 8 years in office — effectively barring Viktor Orbán from ever returning to power. The amendment also allows the government to dissolve state trust funds that Orbán used to privatize universities and transfer them into the hands of members of his party. We remind you that Orbán has held the position of prime minister for 20 years.

Under the constitutional amendment submitted by the Tisza government and passed yesterday, Orbán can never again become prime minister. The amendment counts time served as prime minister from the regime change in 1990 and caps the office at eight years in total. Orbán now claims the Tisza government made itself look ridiculous by voting to make sure he can never return as prime minister. First, this was literally part of Tisza’s programme from the start, so voters knew exactly what they were voting for. Second, thank you for your opinion, Orbán, the permanently retired former ruler. Now shove it.

So why wouldn’t Petro Madyar just give those foreign workers regular rights and regular wages, IF that indeed is his main concern? Because that is NOT his and most Tisza voters’ concern. They are just as anti-migrant as Orbán was. You try to put lipstick on a pig.

Dass Orbán-Anhänger sich über tiefgreifende Reformen beschweren, überrascht wenig. Die spannende Frage ist nicht, ob Magyar umbaut, sondern ob er Institutionen schafft, die auch gegen ihn selbst funktionieren.

After going after the President of Hungary and trying to force him to resign, after constitutionally banning Viktor Orbán from becoming prime minister again, the new Hungarian PM clearly wants to interfere in the freedom of the press, too. This is what he said about conservative news website Mandiner in the Hungarian Parliament: "It will now belong to the state, we will be the publisher, we will have to determine the content they will publish." The new PM wants nothing less than total control and political vengeance.
