Hazrat Anas (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) would ride donkeys and accept invitations even from slaves.
During the Battle of Banu Qurayzah, he (PBUH) was riding a donkey whose reins were made of palm-fiber rope and which had only a simple saddle. He (PBUH) would also readily accept invitations of barley bread and plain old fat (simple food).
Hazrat Anas (RA) further said that the Prophet (PBUH) performed Hajj on a worn-out, plain saddle while covered with a sheet whose value was not even equal to four dirhams. On that occasion, he (PBUH) supplicated:
“O Allah! Make this Hajj one in which there is neither show-off nor seeking of fame.”
Yet at that time, Allah had opened the treasures of the earth for him (PBUH), and during the same Hajj, he (PBUH) sacrificed one hundred camels.
This incident is a brilliant example of the unmatched humility, simplicity, and sincerity of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
