AI Is the Next Wave, Will the Philippines Ride or Watch It Pass?
Had the chance to speak with Stanley Palisada on ANC about what’s next for the Philippines in the age of artificial intelligence. One thing is clear: AI is no longer just a tech issue, it’s a national development issue.
If COVID was the great disruptor of the past era, AI is the defining challenge, and opportunity, of the next. But this wave will not wait. It demands action, coordination, and above all, mindset shifts.
In the interview, I shared four areas where we need all hands on deck:
1️⃣ Education, but for Everyone.
Not just AI and cybersecurity specialists (though we need them!), but mass AI literacy. Everyone, from call center agents to content creators to community leaders, should understand what AI is, what it isn’t, and how to work with it.
2️⃣ Infrastructure, not just innovation.
If we want to build sovereign capability, we need secure, local data centers, public-private R&D labs, and a robust engineering backbone. It’s time to back up our talent with tools.
3️⃣ Regulation that protects, not paralyzes.
Ethical AI isn’t a buzzword, it’s a safeguard. We’ve learned this from privacy and cybercrime laws. Now we need AI governance that punishes abuse and enables responsible experimentation.
4️⃣ Culture that leans into change.
Filipinos are already globally competitive, especially in IT-BPM. But let’s stop underestimating ourselves. These aren’t “simple” jobs. We’ve scaled complex roles in finance, healthcare, and law. AI won’t erase us, it will reshape us. The question is: Are we shaping back?
To me, the next steps are obvious:
✅ Treat AI as a cross-sector priority
✅ Incentivize lifelong learning, not one-time training
✅ Build bridges between government, academia, and industry
✅ Shift the conversation from fear to strategy
This isn’t just about catching up. It’s about choosing to lead where it counts.
Let’s not wait for the wave to crash. Let’s build the surfboard.
