Re-read J. L. Carr's "A Month in the Country". Even better than the first time. At least this time round I knew what ashlar, catafalque, corbels and platelayer meant. Noticed this edition had the misprint 'So they didn't make the many more' for them any, which was amusing. 1/2

On #InternationalWomensDay2026 I pay tribute to the unsung women of the past, including my great-great grandmother, Sarah Ripley. Born in 1855, she'd been the wife of a railway platelayer, but was widowed in her early 50s. In a house of just *4 rooms in total*, she became head of a household of 8, across 3 generations of her, and my, family. She lived on as her family's matriarch for another 30 years, and never remarried. Here she is in 1916, the proud mother-of-the-groom at my great-grandfather's wedding. She died aged 86 in 1941 and I could not be more grateful to her for her strength and fortitude, leading my family alone through the most volatile and transformative period of modern history. Thank you Sarah.

#OnThisDay 1912 Rhymney Railway platelayer (track worker) Charles Beaumont was injured at Dowlais Junction, #Glamorgan, #Wales. The Company record notes he 'claims' he sustained 2 hernias lifting heavy rails - but also that doctors were in dispute over the cause! #Railway200

#OnThisDay 1882 Midland Railway platelayer John Dryer was knocked down & killed at St Mary's, #Derby. Typically for an early worker accident record, the accident register doesn't give more detail. We need to find out more about these ordinary people! #Railway200
