There are numerous jobs that require mandatory retirement such as air traffic controllers, pilots, Federal Law Enforcement, First Responders, and Security Under the Federal Employees' Retirement System (FERS) federal law, federal fire fighters, nuclear materials couriers, national park rangers, military personnel, state foreign service, state judges and corporate executives!
Air Traffic Controllers: Must retire by age 56. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sets this strict limit due to the immense cognitive load, multitasking, and rapid decision-making required. In rare cases of exceptional skills, individual agency waivers can extend service to age 61.
Commercial Airline Pilots: Federal law mandates that commercial pilots must stop flying by age 65. While they can still transition to non-flying roles within an airline, they are barred from operating commercial aircraft beyond this limit.
Federal Law Enforcement, First Responders, and Security Under the Federal Employees' Retirement System (FERS), the absolute mandatory retirement age is 57 for the following fields, provided the employee has reached 20 years of service:
Federal Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs): Includes FBI, DEA, Secret Service, and U.S. Border Patrol agents.
Federal Firefighters: Individuals employed by the military or federal agencies to combat fires.
Nuclear Materials Couriers: Personnel responsible for the secure ground transport of nuclear weapons and materials.
National Park Rangers: Specifically those carrying out law enforcement duties within the park system.
Military Personnel: Under Title 10 of the U.S. Code, regular commissioned military officers must retire at age 62. High-ranking General and Flag Officers (O-9 and O-10) face a mandatory retirement age of 64, though the President or Secretary of Defense can defer this up to age 66 or 68 depending on the deployment need.
Foreign Service Officers (Diplomats):
Members of the U.S. Department of State's Foreign Service are legally required to retire by the end of the month in which they turn 65.
Judicial and Corporate Leadership (State & Private Sectors)
State Judges: While federal judges have lifetime tenure, many U.S. states implement mandatory retirement laws—typically at age 70 or 75—for state Supreme Court justices and lower court judges.
Corporate Executives: The ADEA permits private companies to force retirement at age 65 for individuals in high-level policymaking roles (like CEOs) if they are entitled to an immediate, non-forfeitable annual retirement benefit of at least $44,000
