Sounds like a boring “admin hygiene” topic… but it becomes a real security problem fast.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁?
1️⃣ Operations – you immediately know what a system/account is and where it belongs.
2️⃣ Logs & incident response – when SOC needs answers fast, “SRV07” and “Admin2” slow everything down.
3️⃣ Automation – scripts, filters, GPO targeting, reporting… naming is the foundation for all of it.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻:
❌ Servers named SRV01–SRV20 (no clue what runs where)
❌ Accounts like Admin, ServerAdmin, Service Admin (no owner, no purpose)

👥 Users (make them personal use prefixes or suffixes):
▪️ Standard: dhorak
▪️ Tier admin: t1-dhorak
▪️ Tier service: t1s-app01
🖥️ Devices (encode what you need to operate secure them):
▪️ I like: Location Prod/Test App/Role Type Number
▪️ Example: PRGP-AD-DC01
▪️ (Prague, Production, Active Directory, Domain Controller, 01)
Yes, some regulated environments 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 — fair.
But if you don’t have to… don’t hide behind IDs. It doesn’t add real security, it mostly adds confusion.
