Uart modules sound like a good idea until you need to move something or there's a 50cm bundle of wires hanging out your laptop to reach. I'd go with regular usb2uart/can adapters.
Isolated USBA modules would be goat though.
Depends on the target, does it have UART/JTAG easily exposed, what kind of software etc?
I think both are equally hard or easy, once you have done it a few times.
Yep! I made my own. There’s also an unpopulated connector next to JTAG with two pins connected to pads on the FPGA on a 3.3V bank I think shared with EEPROM I2C. I plan on removing the EEPROM and pull-ups to use as a UART
I built this linux tool a while back. A termios based tool using UART style communication for linux apps.
It has suddenly become useful in a project I am working on.
