15 June 1919. Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown landed their Vickers Vimy IV twin-engine bomber in Clifden, Ireland. They flew 1890 miles in 15 hours 57 minutes at an average speed of 115 mph from St. Johns, Newfoundland.

John “Jack” Alcock and Arthur Brown departed on the first nonstop flight across the Atlantic #OTD in 1919. They flew in a Vickers Vimy biplane from Canada to Ireland.

They went in 1915 and 1916. Both were seriously hurt, blown up on Vimy Ridge and gassed at Arras. I loved them both , my Grandpa and my Poppa.

Even my wife's family, who are the most recent arrivals among us, arrived in time for service at Vimy Ridge and the ultimate sacrifice at Hill 70.
