The McArthur Foundation and the NYT are sometimes driven more by political than by intellectual considerations, but Fei Fei Li and Yejin Choi deserve every honor. Fei Fei Li has led the path with the second most important computer vision dataset after MNIST (ImageNet), and many are aware that Yejin Choi is near the top of the list of people working on using ML for image interpretation (VisualCOMET). They are incredible researchers and brilliant teachers, both among the best current ML professors in the world. Neither is working on AGI, and their most impactful work happens largely within paradigms established by others.
