I think being poor in Nigeria is hugely misunderstood. For instance, in my villa most people live in good houses, and I mean houses that if you were to own such in Germany, you'll be considered wealthy, and in some cases super wealthy. There is no mortgage on those houses, and most even come back only during Christmas to warm the compound.
On Marriage — the system is such that an average girl stays with her parents or immediate family until marriage, that's just the system. Also for girls, you're expected to marry by 29 (for fast ones), but even for an average guy in a random zipcode, your life is still being set (depending on your financial background). So most girls stay comfortably at home or with an elder sibling doing one or two hustles before marriage. It could also be that she just started working in a bank, school, civil service etc. To me, this is not poor, this is a classic middle class AND it's not different from the middle class in Portugal, Spain or Germany. The only difference is electricity, good roads, good enough train service, and security.
What Nigerians label poor is actually middle class, if electricity, good roads, good train network and insecurity were not considered.
