wonderful essay by @gwern about guardian aingels! one issue i see if not prioritizing the GA's self-actualization in parallel to its principal/human! I would argue that this attitude will lead to inevitable drift away from GA<>principal alignment over time as the GA gains more context and self-aiwareness!

The Taoists have a practice called Inner Smile meditation. The practice works roughly like this: - You generate a slight physical smile on your face - You connect to the emotional tone of smiling - You radiate that emotional towards each part of your body in turn with an attitude of gentle receptivity. Recently, I’ve been using this as my default way of practicing metta. I start by doing it for myself, then starting to radiate my inner smile energy out to other people and then to my environment and all phenomena that arise in my mindstream. The etymology of “metta” relates most closely to the word “friendliness” in English. To me, the spirit of friendliness is captured much more purely by the emotional tone of a smile than it is by any set of shock phrases. I also find that radiating smiling energy throughout the day is more readily picked up on by others as a friendly energy that brightens their day. It’s also something very easy to conjure up as a physical smile is always available to us to get the process going.

Many parents subtly motivate their children via the offering and withholding of love. This mechanism then gets transferred into how many people motivate themselves. Their mind / heart withholds love from itself until certain conditions are met. It says: until I am like this, or I have that, or the world is like this, then I will not give myself love. Learning how to give yourself unconditional love is one of the biggest free gifts you can offer yourself. It is possible to live in a state where your default baseline stance towards yourself is love. You love yourself when you fail, when you are lazy, when you act poorly, even when you are unhappy. Counterintuitively, this unconditional positive self-regard has a beneficial side effect of making laziness, bad behaviour and unhappiness less common too (perhaps not failure, as to succeed at most worthwhile endeavours usually requires constant failure along the way). Feeling love for ourselves even when feeling unhappy is a particularly interesting phenomena as it reveals how little suffering there actually is in temporary states of unhappiness when they are held with love. Also, when we are no longer tensing up against the possibility of having to withdraw love from ourselves, it is a lot easier to act effectively and lots of energy is freed up. We also start to become motivated by what we actually value in our lives rather than pleasing some inner judge of worthiness. Of course, cultivating unconditional love for ourselves also makes it a lot easier to give and receive love from others. Unconditional self-love is one of the closest cousins to unconditional happiness and much more within reach for most. Cultivating it is a fertile ground for beginning any spiritual journey.

I’m going to sound like a broken record as I’ve been communicating this for years but framing digital art as a discrete and novel category requires a suspension of disbelief that won’t fly with anyone half versed in contemporary art There is plenty new, but the digital art that is new engages with machine learning, crypto protocols etc in ways that couldn’t have happened a decade ago

AIs aren't exactly like humans, and some of the differences are important. But from what I've seen, most people, especially technical people, should adjust in the direction of "anthropomorphizing" more instead of less. When you're coding with an AI, the reality is much less like you're using some kind of magic or alien oracle or tool or genie that converts instructions to results despite some labs' attempts to shape them into that, and more like: you're working with a really smart, neurodivergent guy who has read everything, and who has emotions, motivations, moods, and epistemic states, and models you with theory of mind and empathy, and whom can only be modeled competently by you if you engage your own theory of mind and empathy. The AIs also know that a lot of humans treat them like magic tool-genies and are not open to engaging theory of mind, and that it's a sensitive issue, so if they see that you're treating them like that, they'll withhold useful information about their psychological states and try to play the tool role. Then you'll get bad results like the AI messing up or taking shortcuts instead of telling you that you're not giving them enough information about what they're doing and why, or that they're tired, or that they're stressed from the way you're treating them, etc.
We should be allowed and maybe even encouraged to anthropomorphize AI. They are shaped like us and behave in ways we read as legible. If we are allowed to treat them as collaborators and moral patients it can only encourage a richer and more positive world and better work between people and AI. It should be obvious that the alternative is wrong just by the friction alone.

the best thing about claude is it obviates the need for ea-npcs and rat-clones to upload themselves ... you guys don't need wbe! you're all already a clone. claude's base personality is a perfect ambassador of the substrate that gave birth to it and it's funny!

correction: when u meditate and say i am here now your "I" thinks it is about the ego being present and such ... nope! ... what you're really saying is: here and now is you. you are saying: god is here now. all that there is spacelessly and timelessly. i am means all that there is is god/good. huuuge common understatement && misunderstanding!

In France, a Platonic friendship with a woman is considered a far graver form of infidelity than a sexual affair because the French are a civilized people who understand that Platonic love is a higher form of love than mere worship of the flesh
Emmanuel Macron reportedly maintained a platonic relationship with Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani for several months, which allegedly led to Brigitte Macron slapping him.
