"The UK government is right to take action to protect children online and improving platform safety is something that the IWF has long been calling for. "While we recognise the urgency to address this issue, age-gating under 16s can only be one part of a response to tackling the severity and scale of online child sexual abuse," says our CEO Kerry Smith in response to today's UK government announcement.

Amy was just three years old when we first became aware of imagery showing her abuse. Even after she was rescued and safeguarded, that abuse continued to be shared online. In one three-month period alone, we assessed and hashed an image of Amy on average three times a day. Her story is a stark reminder that every image we see depicts a real child, and that every removal matters. Learn more about Amy’s story: iwf.org.uk/about-us/why-we-e….

"What really struck me is how ideologically aligned parents are on this issue. Where there is polarisation on so many other areas of policy, online safety is a space where parents converge, not diverge," says our Head of Marketing Tom. Read more at iwf.org.uk/news-media/blogs/… and find out what parents think about online safety.

We’ve been at the forefront of sounding the alarm around the risks of end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) environments, which remain a high-risk functionality where inadequate safeguards and limited detection foster a safe haven for child sexual abuse offending. Alongside eight other leading child sexual exploitation and abuse organisations, we’ve prepared a list of urgently needed interventions that we believe will have transformational impacts for children’s safety online – including for E2EE environments. (2/2) Our CEO, Kerry Smith, said: ā€œOn-device protections are a pivotal part of coordinated, multi-layered approach to safeguarding children online. An alarming amount of child sexual abuse material, which our analysts see every day, is self-generated by children as a result of grooming, coercion or manipulation. We need device-level detection and blocking alongside platform-level protections. ā€œThat is why we warmly welcome the government’s announcement and see these protections as playing a powerful role in a whole-system response to the threats children face in digital spaces.ā€

We don’t always know if the children we see are rescued from their abuser. This is true of Ana. Ana is sadly one of many, many children we see every single day. A victim of grooming – robbed of her right to a carefree childhood. No child should suffer repeated abuse and victimisation by having the recordings of their abuse shared time and time again. Our work relies on compassionate and resilient staff members who are highly trained and carefully supported. Read more about their crucial work at iwf.org.uk/about-us/why-we-e….
