How Much Do Language Models Know About Local Culture?
We introduce BertaQA, a multiple-choice trivia dataset parallel in English and Basque. It consists of a local subset about the Basque culture, and a global subset with questions of broader interest.

We present BiVLC, a Bidirectional Vision-Language Compositionality dataset, which allows evaluating image-to-text and text-to-image retrieval simultaneously. Adding text-to-image retrieval substantially changes the conclusions of previous work.

Do multilingual language models think better in English? 🤔
Yes, they do! We show that using an LLM to translate its input into English and performing the task over the translated input works better than using the original non-English input! 😯

ALT XGLM results (average accuracy). We show that self-translate (using the model itself to translate the input into English) works better than using the original input in the non-English language.
