Every gain we've made is still in danger, and every challenge is a reminder of why we can't let up. A healthy ocean and a strong economy go hand in hand. Living in and representing California’s North Coast has given me a deep appreciation for the incredible natural resources that define our communities and sustain our economy. From defending the West Coast against offshore drilling to advancing climate action and protecting public lands, I’ve always believed that safeguarding our environment is an investment in our future. This award is a reminder that the fight for healthy oceans, resilient communities, and a livable planet is far from over. Republicans are showing us where their priorities lie and it is clearly not with making life more affordable for Americans. Democrats fought tooth and nail against this spending, initially killing it, but republicans brought it back through the budget reconciliation process. The $70B for ICE is a flagrant waste of funds that are going to a rogue agency that has murdered Americans, is causing havoc on our communities, and which - many of us expect - Trump will attempt to weaponize this fall to prevent a free and fair election. Come November, this all changes when Democrats take back the House.

Last month, I went on KQMS to talk about the issues facing our communities. We MUST protect and fund both Social Security and Medicare. These programs are life-saving and needed by our seniors. They are also earned benefits that each of us pays into throughout our working life. It’s unconscionable how Republicans continuously attack them with cuts, eligibility gimmicks and privatization schemes. Trump has proposed deep cuts to Social Security and his personnel purges have further weakened the program. Last year, the GOP's big ugly tax giveaway bill exploded the deficit by $4 trillion, triggering automatic cuts to Medicare of over $500 billion starting a few months from now. When Democrats take back the House this November, we will defend these critical retirement security programs, instead of sacrificing them for tax giveaways to billionaires.

The power to declare war lies with Congress, not the president. House Democrats are not standing idly by as Donald Trump flouts the law and pulls us deeper into his war of choice in Iran. And this week, we finally had enough Republicans standing up for the Constitution to pass a bipartisan resolution against this illegal war -- a war that has no clear objective, has cost Americans' lives, is draining $2 billion each day from the Treasury, and is raising prices for struggling families. The Senate should do the right thing. Adopt the resolution and bring this recklessness to an end.

I had the wonderful experience of riding along with Vivalon's Meals on Wheels program yesterday and helping deliver meals to seniors who are at risk of food insecurity. So many home-bound seniors need this essential program, especially with other parts of our social safety net facing cuts. ICE raids are terrorizing families here at home while we recklessly march towards a war of choice with Iran – draining billions we should be investing in healthcare, climate resilience, and taking care of Americans. We can’t keep governing through fear, cruelty, and endless militarism. America deserves better. And this November, America will have better, when Democrats take back the House. In times like these, Congress isn’t just for debating politics – it’s for carrying out a constitutional duty. Impeachment is about accountability, and whether the rule of law applies equally no matter who holds power. It’s a test of what it means to uphold an oath to the Constitution when it matters most. These are not easy decisions, but they are defining ones, and history will remember how they were made. Come November Democrats will regain the power to hold all those who break the law accountable.
