A Quick Question came up the other day about the door pulls used for sliding doors, including pocket doors: Where in the codes or standards does it specify the required amount of clearance around the surface-mounted pull handle? idighardware.com/2024/01/qq-…

Joe Phillips of Allegion sent me today’s Fixed-it Friday photo, and I’d love to hear from iDigHardware readers – under what circumstances would you install a closer this way? The photo was taken in a high school. idighardware.com/2024/01/ff-…

Jon Payne sent me today’s Wordless Wednesday photo of the secondary exit in a busy truck stop. This is why I firmly believe that AHJs should not allow non-code-compliant security measures “after hours”…those devices often end up installed 24/7. idighardware.com/2024/01/ww-…

I recently saw a photo in a door and hardware installer’s group on social media, with a question about the purpose of the cylinder on the head of the panic hardware. Was it supposed to lock the latch? Or control the locked/unlocked indicator? idighardware.com/2024/01/cla…

FF: Belts and suspenders...and (zip) TIES and (bungee) CORDS! I know it’s Fixed-it Friday, but this photo sent by Jim Overbey of Allegion has me wordless! If life safety was not a concern for the person making this modification, liability should be! idighardware.com/2023/12/ff-…

In the past, some of my colleagues have compared me to Navin Johnson, Steve Martin’s character in The Jerk. I will admit, there are some similarities between Navin’s excitement over the new phone book and my reaction to the publication of the new codes. idighardware.com/2023/12/the…

This Quick Question has come up quite often over the years – I was shocked to find that I had not yet answered it here: Is XYZ product certified as compliant with NFPA 101 (or any other model code)? idighardware.com/2023/12/qq-…

Since this is a travel weekend for many, I’m sharing door photos from my visit to Prison Island. A former prison and quarantine station, the island is now a tourist destination and home to dozens of Aldabra giant tortoises. Enjoy, and safe travels! idighardware.com/2023/11/ww-…

The bottom line is that the need for automatic doors is growing, whether it is because they are required by code or because it’s just the right thing to do in order to make buildings accessible for all. What does your state require? idighardware.com/2023/11/aut…

No…just no. This is not an effective way to lock a classroom door. ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 locksets that have been tested and certified for strength and durability will provide the necessary level of security as well as code compliance. idighardware.com/2023/11/ww-…

Here is one more Fixed-it Friday airport photo (for now)…does anyone else think it’s strange that a semi-permanent sign was printed about the broken lock, instead of repairing the broken lock? Happy Fixed-it Friday! idighardware.com/2023/11/ff-…

When I was at the DHI conNextions Conference in Boston, I met Sushil Kumar, who has written some of the recent iDigHardware posts for our international audience. Today’s post – the first in a series – addresses the BS EN classifications for hinges. idighardware.com/2023/11/bs-…

As a former specwriter, I can see a potential for problems if a plate that is required to be installed with screws is specified for a fire door that requires installation with adhesive. Is this an issue that arises in the field? WWYD? idighardware.com/2023/11/wwy…

I find it interesting to see how people adapt doors and hardware for their convenience – sometimes at the expense of security or code requirements. In today’s Fixed-it Friday post is an example that I saw during the recent DHI conNextions conference. idighardware.com/2023/11/ff-…

Last week I spent an afternoon touring a hospital under renovation after a large electrical fire (more to come on that), and I saw this modification that left me wordless. What do you think? idighardware.com/2023/11/ww-…
