Gender identity ideology was created by the merging of sexology and psychology during the late 1960's. This was also the period when the Western women's movement kicked off. At the time men in the US produced porn of themselves acting like housewives or bound by ropes, as though in response to the feminist activism. Psychologists sought to normalize men's transvestic fetishes by calling it an identity, a "gender" identity, a word women were criticizing. In the process, they conditioned women to accept it, with psychologists recommending that wives not divorce their abusive husbands for masturbating in their underwear, among other problems. This movement did not come from Simone de Beauvoir, nor even Judith Butler, though the latter promotes it. This is a movement that has had the full support of major institutions for decades, with the aim of making men with paraphilias feel better about themselves, and encouraging them to act their fetishes out publicly. Academia is only one aspect of how gender identity ideology became popular. The less convenient truth is that porn was the foundation and gateway, and male sexologists and psychologists promoted it decades ago, even supplying the terminology. This is a fetish-driven movement that would never have gotten this far if it didn't have the backing of powerful men first, supported by academics afterwards.
