Excited! First publication in @the_emancipator!
Work requirements have a “long and racist history” stemming from anti-Black ideas with roots in slavery — they have no place in a country that values the welfare of all its people, Nomi Sofer from @AntiracismCtr writes in The Emancipator.

Today we honor one of the foremothers of Black feminist anthropology. Zora Neale Hurston was born January 7, 1891. An author, an anthropologist, playwright, folklorist and so much more.

#OTD in 1956, the Montgomery Bus Boycott prevailed, ending racial segregation on the public transit system. A federal ruling upheld the decision in Browder v. Gayle and declared Alabama laws requiring segregated buses to be unconstitutional.

Today is the birthday of Ida B. Wells, my spiritual godmother. The NYT once called her a slanderous and nasty-minded mulattress. They can’t defeat your work so they try to defeat your dignity, but that is something over which they have no control. Happy Birthday to a real one.
Today: Third time someone who called me referred to Nikole Hannah-Jones as "the 1619 girl." The degree to which my reminding them she is a 45 year old woman seems to make no real impression is remarkable.

If you want to understand racial disparities in U.S. jails and prisons, look at how they start in the juvenile system. Black children are only 14% of children under 18. But 42% of boys and 35% of girls locked up are Black. prisonpolicy.org/reports/you…
