I couldn’t understand why some African Americans relatives would look me square in the face&tell me “you’re not Black, you’re Canadian”.
Like huh?🤔This (& they) made no sense to me bc in MY BOOK “Black” means “persons of African ancestry”.
But a cpl yrs ago I had an epiphany:

Whereas I & most ppl I know use the word “Black” to describe skin colour/ancestry,
many African Americans use & sincerely understand the word “Black” as an adjective that describes THEIR specific African American CULTURE

If my assertions here are correct, I think this is an important distinction that should be clarified more often because I see tooooo many debates online/in the media re: Blackness that are truly more semantically divisive than fundamentally !
