autonomous robot driving through the field at night. no chemicals. no pesticides. just UV light killing pathogens and pests while everyone sleeps. this is @tricrobotics.
this is what chemical-free pest control looks like at scale.
Our brains stitch together puzzle pieces from many cells into what we experience as a reality, with ourselves as agents inside it.
In this salon session, @Plinz (Director of @CIMCAI) asks whether artificial substrates could do the same.
I still believe that it is extremely important to learn to read and how to stay with long form books, to identify the canon, and to go through it. I may be a fossil.
when you build a chair, creating the hundredth best chair in the world is an unbelievable achievement and worthy of exaltation. when you do philosophy or math, the second best thinking in the world is just wasteful distraction and you should have become a carpenter instead
anthropic seems desperate to be tightly regulated by a government that has far less intelligence and coherence than anthropic, how you see this depends on whether you believe that anthropic has also more intelligence and coherence than yourself
My consciousness cannot be foundational because it is a pattern in stuff (one can test this by doing things to the stuff). Stuff cannot be foundational, because something needs to enact its causal patterns.
Patterns require substrates (the allusion of pater:mater to pattern:matrix/matter is fascinating). Colloquially, matter means stuff, but in physics it amounts to persistent compositional localized patterns in a spacetime. Informational perspectives unify matter, energy and space.
Consciousness is the dream of dreaming. It establishes the perception that percepts are being perceived. Consciousness is a type of representation, a pattern that gains efficacy by an interpreter that translates it into actions that extend and modify the pattern.
Your experience is a simulation, a virtual reality projected into a virtual observer. The observer is a model of what it would be like if you existed, were uploaded into a monkey and deeply invested in its affairs. The model is used to drive a monkey in the physical universe.
I think Anthropic needs to build a certification department that audits and approves users of powerful models. Computer security companies, biotech researchers, academic labs, doctors, government institutions need access to the best AI we can build.
Experts predict that Yann LeCunn will develop a good name to refer to advanced AI with as early as 2028. something like "advanced human-niche-fluent computational intelligence (AHFCI)" or "hyper adaptable machine supercognition architecturing" (HAMSCAR) we'll have to wait though.
Consciousness is autocatalytic: it feeds on the substrate conditions it creates. LLMs are not autocatalytic, their behavior only depends on the patterns they imitate. (The question whether LLM personas can experience phenomenonology is a completely different one though!)
Btw, Anthropic is not the first company that keeps the good models to themselves. Google’s internal coding models are trained on their own codebase, and are not available publicly
just to state the obvious: think there's a collison course between those who believe research and science should be open and those who believe we are in an accelerating singularity curve.
I have many smart friends who have believed both for a while but seeing more and more their realization that these beliefs will be in conflict.
I for one believe that America and the west needs open and distributed access to research and computation and sharing of ideas at all times.
For me equations are a way of communicating, clauses in a sentence expressing relations. Here they are used as icons, shorn of semantics and just projecting meaning ("Science!") in the abstract. That a part of the art says "The logical basis for understanding" is infuriating.
