Thank you for your support @kafkasbluebug 🙏💪
I and @shristhikhanna have collaborated with @Survival to highlight the issue of The Great Nicobar Project and the looming extermination of The Shompen Tribe. The uncontacted Indigenous Shompen survived the 2004 tsunami — one of the world’s deadliest natural disasters. Now, a man-made killer is coming for their island, Great Nicobar. The Indian government wants to replace the Shompen’s unique rainforest with the ‘Hong Kong of India’: featuring a mega-port, a city, an airport, a power station, a military base, an industrial park, and a population the size of Las Vegas. The plan is nothing less than genocidal. Many of the Shompen are uncontacted, but they’re not in this fight alone. Stand with them, and write to the government to tell them to drop this disastrous project: svlint.org/ShompenIG

NEW JOINT STATEMENT | REVOKE OFAC LICENSES A coalition led by @SOSOrinoco with @GlobalWitness @Survival @FACTCoalition, Environmental Investigation Agency US and Venezuelan environmental partners @clima21_VE @WatunnaV @CHUNIKAI_VZLA Laboratorio de Paz, Fundacion AguaClara, Grupo Emergencia Humanitaria Compleja en Agua, Movimiento Ser, warns that OFAC's new Venezuela mineral licenses (GL51A, 54, 55) could open global markets to conflict gold, narco proceeds, and terror-linked revenue streams. ❗️GL54 is the real inflection point. GL55 is the quiet entry point. ‼️Without full mine-to-export traceability, this risks becoming one of the largest illicit gold laundering pipelines ever opened to global markets. 📄 Statement: drive.google.com/file/d/1IPZ…

News: #African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights finds Ethiopia violated rights of indigenous peoples over #Kuraz Sugar Project The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (#ACHPR) has found that the #Ethiopian government violated the rights of indigenous peoples in the Lower Omo Valley in relation to the Kuraz Sugar Project, while clearing the country of violations linked to the controversial Gibe III dam. According to the Commission, the Indigenous Peoples of the Lower Omo were represented by Survival International Trust, an organization that has long campaigned against the Kuraz Sugar Project. The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) has found the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in violation of Article 22(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which guarantees “the right to economic, social and cultural development with due regard to their freedom and identity and in the equal enjoyment of the common heritage of mankind.” However, the Commission “found that the Respondent State has not violated the provisions of Articles 20(1), 21(1), 22(1) (in respect of Gibe III dam) and 24 of the African Charter,” effectively dismissing complaints relating to the Gibe III hydropower project. The ACHPR’s findings come as the government continues to push ahead with the privatization of several state-owned sugar factories, including the Kuraz plants implicated in the Commission’s decision. addisstandard.com/?p=53447

It is abundantly clear that the Great Nicobar Infrastructure Project is a recipe for ecological and humanitarian disaster. I have had a detailed exchange with the Union Minister of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change on this catastrophe but the Modi Govt is insistent and persistent. Here is a link to that exchange - linktr.ee/jairam_ramesh Many professionals have also continued to speak out against the project. The latest revelation is that the environmental impact study conducted for this project completely downplayed the earthquake risks. As the Dec 2004 tsunami demonstrated, such risks are for real. Moreover, there are other geodynamic sources of risk that cannot be brushed aside.

The Jenu Kuruba tribe were forcibly evicted from their land in the forest at Nagarhole and forced to work like slaves on coffee plantations 40 years ago. They now are reoccupying their ancestral land. It is completely wrong of Karanataka to reject their claims under the Forest Rights Act. Hope the Ministry of Tribal Affairs protects their rights. This Act was brought out to protect them. @TribalAffairsIn @Survival
