The Temple High School Pitmasters BBQ Team closed out the season in style by finishing in fifth place overall and placing in three individual categories at the National High School BBQ Associationโ€™s National Championships today. The Pitmasters placed in ribeye steak, chicken, and pork shoulder to claim fifth place overall out of 75 teams representing 10 different states at the competition. Temple High School won reserve grand champion honors as the second-place finisher in the ribeye steak category. The Pitmasters also added a fifth-place finish in chicken and earned an 11th-place finish in pork shoulder. Teams also competed in ribs, grilled cheese and Dutch oven upside-down cake dessert with a cumulative score determining overall finishes. The Temple High School team is coached by Temple alum Joe Medrano and his wife, Allison. The five-person team is made up of senior Alex Mungia, juniors Hunter Frank and Travis Scantling, sophomore Colton McKenney, and freshman Maxwell Morrison. Each team member is responsible for a specific food item that must be turned in on a very specific timeline during each competition. Mungia is in charge of the upside-down Dutch oven cake dessert, Frank oversees the grilled cheese, Scantling handles the ribeye steaks, McKenney is the chicken specialist, and Morrison takes the lead with the ribs. The pork shoulder competition was added for the National Championship, presenting a new challenge. All five of the team members had a hand in preparing the pork and also helped each other with the other items during the competition. This is the second time the Pitmasters have posted a top-five team finish at the National Cookoff. The inaugural Temple Pitmasters Team took second place to win reserve grand champion honors at the 2023 National Championship. Temple High School was also the defending national champion in pork shoulder. The Pitmasters compete as part of the National High School BBQ Association and also represent Temple High School Career and Technical Education. Congratulations to all! #TempleISDproud

TISD has the privilege of honoring Thornton Elementary School fifth grader Theresa Carey as the local winner of the Daughters of the American Revolutionโ€™s American History Essay Contest. Not only did Theresa win at the local level, but her essay advanced to the state-level contest, where she finished second in the state of Texas. The American History Essay Contest is a national competition for students in fifth through eighth grades. This yearโ€™s topic was โ€œLunch with a Signer,โ€ which required Theresa to write about a signer of the US Constitution and why she would choose to have lunch with them. Theresa was honored last month by the Betty Martin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for winning the local competition, and we were proud to recognize her at the TISD Board Meeting on Monday evening. Congratulations, Theresa and thank you for the way you represent Temple Independent School District. #TempleISDproud

The Rotary Club of Temple supports teachers in Temple Independent School District by recognizing an Educator of the Month at club meetings throughout the year. The district is also proud to recognize the selected teachers and administrators at our board meetings. Carl Pleasant of Wheatley Alternative Education Center was the Temple ISD educator recognized by the Rotary Club in May. Mr. Pleasant has spent the last 19 years as the principal at Wheatley, where he oversees the Temple ISD Disciplinary Alternative Education Program, or DAEP, Wheatley Adult Education, and Wheatley Academics. Mr. Pleasant has impacted generations of Temple students during his time in Temple ISD. He works tirelessly to provide opportunities for learners of all ages and backgrounds through his work at Wheatley. He has a unique talent of connecting with students, even when they and their families are dealing with situations where they are not necessarily receptive. He has hosted numerous DAEP conferences for area districts and has made Temple ISDโ€™s DAEP a model for the region and the state. Mr. Pleasant, we are so happy to be able to join the Rotary Club of Temple in recognizing you as Educator of the Month, and we are very grateful for the impact you make on our students, their families, your campus, and the entire Temple community. We also wish you the best in your upcoming retirement and thank you for your years of service to Temple ISD and our community. #TempleISDproud
