Action Alliance (AA) is trending because the Federal High Court has ordered INEC to deregister five parties including AA, ADC, Accord, ZLP and Action Peoples Party.. because;
They didn’t meet the benchmark for party registration, meaning:
1. Party must win atleast a seat in the Senate, HoR, State Assembly, or LG Councillorship. (previous election)
2. Party must have up to 25% votes in atleast on one state during a (previous) presidential election and governorship election.
3. Party must not breach any requirements for registration. Such as: Membership must be open to all Nigerians; no provoking ethnic, religious connotations; party must not operate as a secret society; party must provide manifesto, constitution and other information required.
All according to Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as reinforced by the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s regulations. However, the ‘And’ and ‘Or’ interpretations, remains subjective.
The case was filed by The National Forum of Former Legislators, who argued that these five parties persistently failed to meet the benchmark to retain their registration.
And, they failed woefully in previous elections and bye-elections as they were unable to win any seat. Hence, their inclusion is unlawful and undermines the integrity of the country’s electoral system.
Therefore, INEC should deregister and ban them from all election activities. The court granted their prayers, rendering Atiku Abubakar, Ademola Adeleke, Oriyomi Hamzat and many others stranded..
While Sowore’s AAC falls under same category. It was however not reported (included in the suit). Also, NDC is a new party, the (1) and (2) will be effective for them after the next election cycle.
Despite panic in the ADC camp, Obidients remain calm, unsure of what fate awaits the NDC despite its virgin status.
