#UdeA science contributes to the first large-scale genetic study on dementia in Latin America! Universidad de Antioquia is part of the «ReDLat Consortium,» a scientific network that brings together researchers from six countries in the region and the United States to better understand diseases such as Alzheimer's and frontotemporal dementia from a Latin American perspective.
📊 In the first phase of the project, genetic data from 2,162 participants from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru were analyzed. The study identified 17 pathogenic genetic variants associated with these diseases, a key step toward more accurate diagnoses and a science built from and for the region.
🧬 The Antioquia Neuroscience Group (GNA), from UdeA’s Faculty of Medicine, played a fundamental role. It contributed nearly 40% of the genetic samples used in this research, thanks to decades of work with families and communities under the leadership of the late Dr. Francisco Lopera.
🌎 This scientific endeavor seeks to close a historical gap—much of the knowledge about dementia comes from studies in Europe and North America, while Latin America has its own genetic diversity and social contexts that also need to be studied. Led by researchers like Juliana Acosta Uribe, a UdeA graduate and leader of the genetic component of the Consortium, this project opens new avenues for understanding risk factors, improving diagnosis, and advancing toward more relevant treatments for Latin American populations.
