Yesterday marked #WorldParrotDay, a global celebration of parrots and an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges they face in the wild, including habitat loss and the wildlife trade. To mark the occasion, we highlighted South Africa’s only endemic parrot, the Cape Parrot, our jewel of the forest. Earlier this month, the School of Agriculture and Science supported the annual Cape Parrot Big Birding Day, organised by the Cape Parrot Working Group (CPWG), which is based primarily at UKZN. This national census, conducted regularly since 1998, has played a key role in monitoring Cape Parrot populations and contributed to the species being downgraded from Endangered to Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List in 2025. While this is an encouraging conservation milestone, Cape Parrots still need ongoing support to survive and thrive. As a flagship species for South Africa’s dwindling Mistbelt forests, their future remains closely linked to the health of these unique ecosystems.
