Rock Ridge Area Fire Update # 4 (May 23, 12:30 PM) Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue crews remain on site continuing to work throughout the day alongside BC Wildfire Service crews to respond to the smoldering ground fire along the interface of the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. Fire activity has slowed down and the fire is currently contained. The expectation is for the fire to reach “Held” status by the end of the day. Assessment of trees and surrounding hazards in the area is currently underway. At this time, the wildfire continues to not pose a threat to structures, critical infrastructure, or public safety. There have been no reported injuries to the public or firefighters. Thank you to all crews who continue to work tirelessly to protect our community. Rock Ridge Area Fire Update #3 (May 23, 9:15 AM) Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue crews continue to respond to the fire located at the top of the Rock Ridge area along the interface of the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. The fire, which started at approximately 6:30 PM yesterday evening, is currently estimated at 1.5 hectares in extremely steep and challenging terrain. Approximately 25 personnel were on scene and into the early morning hours. Crews will continue active firefighting operations throughout the day. Conditions remained stable overnight and weather conditions held as forecasted, assisting crews in preventing further fire escalation. We continue to work closely with staff and equipment operators from the UBC Malcolm Knapp Research Forest. Additional support resources are also being coordinated with BC Wildfire Service fire crews to assist with fire suppression efforts this morning. At this time, there is no risk to the public or nearby properties. There have been no reported injuries to the public or firefighters. Thank you to all crews who worked tirelessly throughout the evening and overnight to help protect our community. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Council and staff at the City of Maple Ridge are mourning the loss of Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Stephane Labonne, who passed away on Wednesday, April 8, following a lengthy illness. A highly respected colleague and dedicated public servant, Stephane had a strong work ethic and deep commitment to local government. Prior to joining the City of Maple Ridge in 2022, he held senior positions with several municipalities in Alberta, bringing a wealth of experience and leadership to his role. During his time with the City – first as General Manager of Parks, Recreation and Culture and then Deputy Chief Administrative Officer – Stephane was a driving force behind many of the City’s major initiatives. His leadership and contributions have left a lasting impact on the community. As of April 1, the former Ridge Meadows RCMP Detachment has officially transitioned to two autonomous detachments. Maple Ridge now has a dedicated RCMP presence focused solely on meeting the needs of our community @RidgeRCMP “Maple Ridge congratulates the City of Pitt Meadows as they move forward independently with their own RCMP detachment. With the transition now complete, Maple Ridge moves forward with a dedicated Maple Ridge RCMP presence focused on the needs of our community, and residents can be assured they will continue to receive the same high standard of professional policing services. We thank the officers and staff for their ongoing hard work, professionalism, and commitment to keeping Maple Ridge safe,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. This transition from a shared policing model has been a multi-year initiative, developed in close collaboration with municipal partners, the Province of BC and the RCMP. Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue crews remain on scene of an overnight fire at a vacant two-storey apartment building on Laity Street (between Lougheed Hwy and Dewdney Trunk Rd). No injuries reported. 🚧ROAD CLOSURE: Laity Street is closed from Lougheed Hwy to Dewdney Trunk Rd and is expected to remain closed for most of the day. Barricades are in place and @RidgeMeadowsRCMP are assisting with traffic control.
