No despot stays in the sky forever. There is a day of reckoning for everything, for every life stolen and for every tear shed.

Jollibee recently opened in Lamitan, its second branch in Basilan after Isabela City. This is the southernmost Jollibee branch, its last store in the country before Malaysia. This is such a beautiful sign that Basilan has outgrown its past, and is now open for business!

Whenever I tell friends and my family that I’m in Basilan, they would always react as if I lost my wits. Having grown up to the news of Basilan kidnappings (and beheadings), I totally understand the concern.

But all of these are in the past—the Abu Sayyaf are gone; the once notorious Punu Mahadje (which we visited) is being developed to a coffee plantation; and there are now two Jollibee branches in Basilan. Indeed, the times have changed! With that, welcome to Basilan!

Rich kids being able to do art for a living may be a reflection of their privilege but it seems to me like a reflection of the fact that a human that doesn't have to worry about money will often choose art. everyone is an artist until rent is due. i wish we all had that right

I saw a post on Reddit that said that “The underlying purpose of AI is to allow wealth to access skill while removing from the skilled the ability to access wealth.” And I don’t think I’ve ever seen AI described so incisively.

Our continuing celebration of our “independence” day on a June 12 (not on July 4) is a perpetuation of the great American lie that they are not colonizers, but liberators. The thousands of our ancestors who died during the Philippine-American War must be turning on their graves.

Our Independence Day is also for the unconquered peoples of the Cordillera and of Luzon; the tumandoks of Panay, Palawan and Mindoro; the Lumads of Mindanao and the Moros of the Bangsamoro who all withstood foreign invasion yet remain excluded in our narrative of nationhood.

It’s time for Congress to criminalize plunder/corruption resulting to homecide or physical injuries to make responsible government officials/employees and colluding contractors criminally liable for deaths and injuries caused by defective and substandard government projects.

Here is an animation depicting the spread of seismic waves across the globe and to the antipode from the M7.8 earthquake that struck the Philippines. The entire Earth shakes for hours after powerful events as such!
