Jogendra Nath Mandal, a Dalit leader, Ambedkar’s own protege & Pakistan’s first Law Minister convinced Dalits to stay back in East Pakistan during 1946–47, arguing they would be safer under a Muslim majority state than in a Hindu majority India.
Between 1947 & 1950, Dalits were persecuted precisely coz they were Hindus. In October 1950, Mandal resigned, wrote a scathing indictment detailing Pakistan’s systematic persecution of Hindus & Dalits, & fled to India for safety.
Ambedkar, as early as 1945–46, long before becoming India’s Law Minister in 1947 & before the Constitution was framed 1950, had already warned that Hindus & Dalits could never be safe in a state defined by Muslim majority.
So let this be clear: a Dalit Law Minister with a Constitution could not save himself or Dalits in Pakistan, whereas Ambedkar, without a Constitution was already certain Dalits would be safer in India because of Hindu majority.
So Pipe down this Constitution romanticism.
