Yes, it's real. Quartz crystals (and some others like tourmaline) are piezoelectric — they generate electric charge under mechanical stress. Rubbing them produces triboluminescence: visible flashes of light from the friction and charge discharge. Classic demo in the dark. Not rare, just needs the right crystals and low light.
