The sickening knife attack in Belfast & the subsequent racist violence, were squarely the fault of the perpetrators. The fallout, though, highlighted how Westminster & Stormont have let NI down; as well as exposing again the Dublin government’s hypocrisy. newsletter.co.uk/news/opinio…

Replying to @deirdreheenan
Deidre, I just saw this, you didn't tag me. Why have you posted a carefully edited clip that has the effect of distorting my point, ending before I explain myself? The emjoi implies I was inconsistent. And what are you saying? That unionists are more racist than nationalists? If so, why not actually say it, just as I went on TV to argue the contrary? It is a self-serving nationalist myth

‘The complexity of the conflict’ says the BBC when Burrow’s points out that the terrorist wing of Hazzard’s party murdered thousands of people
Chris Hazzard’s selective outrage is staggering. You can’t lecture others about Northern Ireland’s history since 1969 while ignoring the brutal IRA campaign carried out by the military wing of your own party. We must reject all violence, but never permit the rewriting of history.

What actually happened in the Troubles in terms of murders, phase by phase - fyi @owenjonesjourno
1 in 20 Catholic families were burned out of their homes in Belfast in 1969. As one scholar put it, at the time it was "the largest forced population movement in Western Europe since the Second World War."

If 'moderate unionism' is equivalent to progressive-cliche bingo, as you would think listening to some of Burrows' critics, then it may not be worth saving. What NI needs is assertive, persuasive unionist leadership. app.newsletter.co.uk/story/8…

“I previously compared @mikenesbittni’s ‘unionism’ to the Christianity of a vicar who does not believe in God…” C.S. Lewis: “Once the layman was anxious to hide the fact that he believed so much less than the vicar; now he tends to hide the fact that he believes so much more.”

The problem with Streeting's plans on Capital Gains Tax. A well-evidenced article from @TheBluetrot
Capital gains tax has stumped politicians for decades; Streeting doesn’t stand a chance "For 10 years between 1988–1998, CGT was aligned with income tax and indexed. The result was hugely lower transactions & revenues." My latest column for @Telegraph bit.ly/4vq2oCg
