Meet St. Hyacinth, patron saint of weightlifters!
According to legend, during the Mongol invasion of Kiev (around 1240). As a Dominican friar, Saint Hyacinth was fleeing the attack on a monastery/church. He took the ciborium containing the Blessed Sacrament. According to the story, he then heard the statue of the Virgin Mary (often described as a heavy stone, alabaster or a marble one) call out to him not to leave her behind to the hands of her enemies. Despite its great weight, far more than one person could normally carry, he miraculously lifted both the statue and the Eucharist with ease and escaped.
This miracle of supernatural strength is the basis for his patronage of weightlifters. Catholic devotional sites, weightlifting communities (like Saint Michael Barbell Club), and many faithful reference it directly.
