#OTD Sept. 10, 1897 -Waverly, NJ- Major Taylor “wins in spite of all.” @bostonglobe explains: In 1-mile race, all the riders worked together in pairs, except Taylor, who had no ally. Still, Taylor maneuvered into position for final sprint, “winning in a most sensational manner.”

#OTD Aug. 22, 1893 - Major Taylor, at 14, got to dine w/ his idol, world champ A.A. Zimmerman, who was arriving in Indy to race. He also met "the Millbury wonder" Willie Windle. Taylor saw "no race prejudice" in them, marveling "that men can be champions & still be broad-minded."

#OTD Aug. 4, 1898 - Waltham Mfg. Co. ad in Cycle Age dubbed Major Taylor "King of Sprinters." Yesterday at @WalthamMuseum, collector Rick Wolfe showed an Orient chainless bike that appears to be the same model Taylor used to set world records in Philadelphia a few months later.
