this misses the most important part! Inside of us is a process that bridges evolution and learning to create an architecture capable of recursive self-improvement. No life without it. what is this metalearning process ? it’s not the genome, or the brain…

people forget about the Baldwin effect when reasoning about the difference between evolution and learning when you recapitulate learning that your ancestors did, when you learn to see, walk, and speak in an unbroken line for thousands of generations, it gets easier each time

schizophrenia has never been diagnosed in a person who was born blind

Something about the “mirage reasoning” mode seemed to put the model in a different epistemological framework; one in which it performs significantly better than guessing.

when models hallucinate glioblastoma, melanoma, or STEMI where no images exist, are they doing something similar?

curious how these mirage diagnoses rates compare to their prevalence in the training data

Two are uniquely dedicated to computation; the nervous system and germline- also the two that dedicate the most resources to the metalearning process, with unparalleled epigenetic plasticity

Both optimize for survival and improvement, but on two different timescales: the brain for the individual the germline for the species

Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above what many major foundations allow and much lower than the 60% that some institutions charge the government today. This change will save more than $4B a year effective immediately.
