Very true!! @simonjduffy - and a good reminder - "numbers can be an asset too" 👍
Replying to @CormacRussell
This is very true. But let's not be too hard on numbers. Often we count the wrong things or fail to reflect what the numbers really mean. e.g. asking better questions is part of what we did to show the value of @pfgdoncaster Numbers can be an asset too citizen-network.org/library/…

If we are to de-professionalise 'social' 'care' so that communities have the capacity to do this, what skills do communities/people need to do this?
Replying to @CormacRussell
Safe guarding has been outsourced to social workers et al, like health to doctors and safety to police. It’s become professionalized. Professionals have played a part in this. We need to shift the narrative towards a community capacity approach & a whole community response 4/5

Hear! Hear! & we're not just talking about children. Any/all of us involved in working with people are doing 'social' 'work'. & it's not just the professionals supporting others. How are we supporting communities to do it for themselves? What are the skills we use & can pass on?
If it takes a village 2 raise a child. What r we doing 2 grow a village? How can we building communities that know how 2 keep all children safe? 2day much blame is being put at the feet of social workers. But what social work r we not yet doing that could make a difference? 1/5

"How do we begin to shift these privileged relationships to shift resources in different ways?"...3 ABCD is all about a mindset shift and a power shift, from people outside the community/neighbourhood back to the people within. And this poses big questions.

Malik Gul raised some interesting questions following the launch of the new text on ABCD 'The Connected Community'. "Billions of pounds of our money is held in institutions, who have statutory responsible for whole population support and care...1

Very interesting to hear from John & Cormac at the book launch last night. Some challenging discussion at the end around institutional power. Key snippets from John - "If we were organised, what would we be doing?" "People as powerful producers, not poor consumers."
There r moments in time u just want to treasure forever; tonight was one of those occasions. 2 b in the presence of so many of the ppl we love & admire from around the world & to feel their support & solidarity means the world. Huge Tks from John & I @BKpub #theconnectedcommunity

Covid restrictions have taken their toll on peoples' resilience. Depending on where you live, coming out of (& back into??) restrictions, it seems people are more dependent on services and less inclined to do for themselves. Anyone else noticing this?
Here’s how I characterize the journey from institutization to interdependence in diverse natural/normalized community life. From ‘done to’ & ‘done for’ to “done by & led by citizens” with supplementary help from professionals as needed. Some folks are getting stuck in the middle.

"People waking up their own authentic ways of being in community, telling each other 'we are the people we’ve been waiting for'.” ABCD is about connecting, including, more 'And', less 'Or'. #kinderleeds #communityconnection
This is not so much the language of “we need a new system”or “we need a new narrative”. It’s closer to “we are the true system” & “we are the real story”. People waking up their own authentic ways of being in community, telling each other”we are the people we’ve been waiting for”
