Alberta Municipalities collaborated with the Rural Municipalities of Alberta and Alberta Association of Community Peace Officers (@_aacpo) to advocate for presumed PTSD coverage for Community Peace Officers (CPOs) in Alberta. CPOs face risks and psychological trauma in their roles. However, when seeking Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB) support, their PTSD is not presumed to be work-related because they’re not considered first responders in legislation. This hinders their access to support. Both, ABmunis and @RuralMA have ongoing resolutions on this topic. Learn more about it here: abmunis.ca/system/files/2025… #ABmunis

ABmunis member-municipalities adopted a resolution in 2023 to advocate for @YourAlberta to give Community Peace Officers (CPOs) suffering PTSD the same @WCBAlberta coverage as other police officers. Why? Because 50% of public safety officers have some form of mental health concern. CPOs deserve the same supports for the same issues. @RuralMA @_aacpo

NEWS RELEASE: Alberta Municipalities’ initial reaction to Budget 2025 is that it is something of a mixed bag. We appreciate the increased funding for Grants in Place of Taxes (GIPOT) in this year’s budget and the provincial government’s commitment to make municipalities whole next year. We are also pleased to see the provincial government has retained funding for low-income transit riders. Alberta Municipalities appreciates that Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) Capital funding increased by $96 million in accordance with the agreed-upon formula. We will continue to advocate for the overall LGFF funding envelope to be increased. We are concerned about the implications of stagnant funding for Family and Community Social Services (FCSS). ABmunis is keen to collaborate with the provincial government on this topic. Read the full news release here: bit.ly/4bo7yWQ

ABmunis' President @CptGandam joined Ministers @MikeEllisUCP, @RicMcIver, @MayorGenung and Mayor @AmarjeetSohiYEG to announce the unified command for community peace officers with local police services. We acknowledge that the crime and social disorder caused by drugs, including fentanyl, trafficked across the international border and interprovincial boundaries are immense. It puts a strain on policing, public safety, and family & community support services in communities of all sizes and locations in Alberta. Community peace officers in many of our member communities have been working closely with municipal police services for some time. We are pleased to work with @YourAlberta on this important initiative. #ABmunis

We are pleased @YourAlberta increased funding for the Fire Services Training Program by $500K to $1 million for training grants in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Our members passed a resolution (B8) in 2024 calling for additional support from the provincial & federal governments for firefighter training. Thanks for taking our members’ concerns into account, Minister @RicMcIver!
