Division 4 Boys Lax State Title Final: #1 Cohasset 7 #2 Nantucket 6 Incredible game. Whalers played their hearts out to get back into it after falling into a 5-1 hole in the first half, but it was too little too late. Cohasset wins the Division 4 State Championship @ACKCurrent
End of the Third Quarter: #1 Cohasset 5 #2 Nantucket 5 Gutsy performance from the Whalers to rally back after falling into a 5-1 hole. That title experience showing up in a big way so far. Cohasset hasn’t scored since there was 7:41 left in the second quarter.

Also, I’ll have what Martha’s having!
How great is this? Martha Holdgate Butler, right, one of two surviving members of the Nantucket High School Class of 1946, with her great granddaughter Sadie Paterson who graduated yesterday as part of the Nantucket High School Class of 2026…80 years later!

Three people were rescued from a sailboat that struck the east jetty as it was entering Nantucket Harbor just after midnight early Friday morning. There were no injuries reported. Coast Guard Station Brant Point and a Nantucket Harbormaster crew both responded to the incident. Coast Guard Master Chief John Lowell told the Current that the sailboat, the Blue Rider, was arriving in Nantucket Harbor after sailing from Portland, Maine. “They were inbound the harbor and struck the inside of the east jetty,” Lowell said. “It was very high tide with little moon illumination, so the jetty was likely almost completely submerged and difficult to see.” There was no indication that alcohol played any role in the incident, Lowell said. Tow Boat US pulled the sailboat off the jetty just before 8am Friday morning. The Coast Guard’s crew on the rescue was led by BM2 Grace Lawter, while the Harbormaster crew was led by Deputy Harbormaster Shane Carey.

A fisherman reeled in a great white shark on Nantucket’s south shore on Sunday, as dozens of people gathered on the beach to watch and record the spectacle. Elliot Sudal has been fishing for sandbar sharks and other species during the summers for more than a decade. On Sunday, he was out fishing on the south shore with his apprentice, Stone Fornes, and fellow angler Nathan Skerritt, when they realized they had a big one on the line. The Current caught up with Sudal on Monday to ask about the catch that has since made headlines in Boston and beyond. Q: What were you fishing for? A: We were just out testing the waters, conditions looked great, just wanted to see if anything was around. Everything has been showing up earlier the last few years, sandbar sharks, duskys, sand tigers, roughtail rays. The water’s still in the 50s, but they’re here. Q: What are the rules for this type of fishing? A: That was the first white I’ve hooked in 13 years on Nantucket. Caught 1000-plus sandbars and hundreds of duskys off the beach, tagged most of them along the way. By no means was targeting that white, you can’t control what picks up your bait. I posted that video because I feel like I did everything right in that situation. Shark was in the surf, removed the hook and sent her back to sea in about 15 seconds. If you are into shark fishing here, use appropriate heavy tackle, barbless circle hooks, and release immediately. Take the online course, get involved with a tagging program. Understand people are watching you, respect the animal and be safe. Q: What did you do when you realized it was a white? A: Saw the spotted pectoral fin flash in a wave and just focused. Understood the gravity of the situation and had to get her released safely and quickly. Amazing creature, humbled to be blessed with the opportunity to interact with one. Had a great crew helping with everything, she swam off strong, not something we will ever forget. 🎥: @brynerOliveira

Old Thom, the solitary male orca known to frequent New England waters, was spotted just 10 miles off Nantucket on Wednesday by Capt. Shawn Deane of Sure Shot Charters, who shared this video with the Current. Massachusetts shark biologist John Chisholm said Old Thom was easily recognizable in the clip due to his unique dorsal fin, which has a distinct notch. While orcas typically travel in highly-structured family groups called pods, Old Thom is usually spotted alone in the waters of the North Atlantic, or sometimes cruising with a group of white-sided dolphins. Old Thom was most recently seen on Stellwagen Bank in April, and is a regular visitor to the Gulf of Maine, the Bay of Fundy, and the waters off Cape Cod. Thanks to Capt. Shawn for sharing this incredible encounter with us!

Nantucket’s Unitarian Church has canceled its annual Fourth of July celebration, which traditionally includes a reading of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, in an act of political protest. The annual celebration has been hosted by the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House at its Orange Street church for the past 25 years. But as the nation celebrates its 250th birthday this year, that tradition will be on hiatus following a decision by Rev. Erin Splaine and the Unitarian Church’s Board of Trustees. Read it here: nantucketcurrent.com/opinion…

UPDATE: Father Max Wolf said St. Paul’s Church on Fair Street would take up the mantle of hosting a reading of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights on the morning of July 4th. Time is TBD. Father Wolf said it was not about repudiating the Unitarian Church’s position, but rather bringing people together. “Those documents are aspirational,” he said. “We may not be there yet but we felt it was improtant to gather together and try to live up to the promises our country has made.”

😮 Billionaire Herb Chambers’ super yacht “Excellence” rounded Brant Point Wednesday morning, dwarfing the Hy-Line’s fast ferry Grey Lady IV as the two vessels passed the lighthouse. The 262-foot yacht has a unique inverted bow, and is among the largest vessels that can safely navigate into Nantucket Harbor. Chambers, who made his fortune by building an empire of car dealerships, grew up in Dorchester, Mass., and dropped out of high school before joining the U.S. Navy as an aviation electrician. When he got out of the Navy, Chambers started bartending at his mother’s bar in the South End, but she fired him after just two months for missing a shift. He went on to found a successful copier distribution company before acquiring his first car dealership in Connecticut in 1985. Chambers is now 84 years old, and his yacht Excellence has made several stops in Nantucket Harbor in recent years. 📸: @kitnoble
